U.S. Government's New Comprehensive HIV Program Launched in Nepal
DECEMBER 2011 — On Nov. 28, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) launched its latest HIV intervention program for Nepal, the Saath-Saath Project. The project is being implemented by FHI 360 in partnership with various national and international organizations and aims to reduce the spread of HIV and improve the reproductive health of selected most-at-risk populations.

Diagnosing HIV in Infants
MAY 2011 — FHI Nepal is entering the third year of a pilot program for early infant diagnosis that is overcoming challenges related to geography and poor HIV awareness. In one rural district it works with a USAID-funded pilot PMTCT program that is making HIV testing and care routine in remote areas. As lessons emerge from the PMTCT and early infant diagnosis programs, they will support the scale-up of these services in Nepal.

FHI 360 works to contain the spread of HIV and increase access to HIV prevention, support, and treatment for those most at risk. Partnering with the Government, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), United Nations agencies, the private sector, and civil society, we
- Manage programs that strengthen health systems, research and surveillance, and HIV prevention
- Implement the Advancing Surveillance, Policies, Prevention, Care, and Support to Fight HIV/AIDS (ASHA) project
- Conduct a cost analysis of community-based prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV and an assessment of the HIV prevention and treatment needs of most-at-risk adolescents
- Pilot a community-based PMTCT program to increase the number of mother–infant pairs who receive antiretroviral therapy and HIV information
- Ensure access to HIV treatment, care, and support for vulnerable groups and people living with HIV, including migrants and their families in Far West Nepal.

FHI 360 promotes early detection and treatment of TB. Through the implementation of the TB Reach Project, we
- Collaborate with regional TB treatment centers to increase TB detection among seasonal migrant workers, high-risk and hard-to-reach vulnerable people, and out-patient clients from Government hospitals
- Treat, perform regular follow-up, and ensure treatment adherence with recently diagnosed patients through existing National TB Program facilities.

- Examine the volume of medical waste and the rate at which it is generated
- Categorize waste and review disposal techniques and occupational health and safety practices
- Utilize findings to inform feasible and sustainable techniques to improve health care waste management

Community and Home-Based Care in Nepal
AUGUST 2008 — With nearly 70,000 people living with HIV in Nepal, community and home-based care is vitally important to ensuring that all have access to care and defense against stigma and discrimination. This review details a national assessment of service models of community and home-based care across Nepal. The goal of the assessment is to use the findings and recommendations to guide future implementation and scale-up of community and home-based care services in areas of need.
