Pharmaceutical Breakthrough Reduces Malaria Deaths in Africa's Children

mosquitoAPRIL 2011 — Malaria is a leading cause of pediatric hospitalizations across Africa. Until recently, there was one main drug to treat severe malaria — quinine. A recent FHI-monitored study of an alternative medicine, artesunate, showed promising results. If artesunate was used to treat the 4 million annual cases of severe malaria among African children, about 100,000 lives could be saved each year.

Shining a Light on one of FHI's Stars: Dr Dário Sacur, TB Expert in Mozambique

Dario SacurMARCH 2010 — Dário Sacur, MD, has been working to reduce Mozambique's heavy TB burden for a large part of his professional life. Now Dr Sacur is FHI's field project director in Mozambique for the USAID-funded Tuberculosis Control Assistance Program (TB CAP), where he addresses many challenges to reduce the burden of TB on his countrymen.

Building Research Capacity
FHI is developing clinical and community research capacity with the Mozambican National Institute of Health in Chokwe and the Catholic University of Mozambique in Beira.

Fighting Malaria
FHI is a partner in the PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative (MVI), funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to accelerate the development of malaria vaccines and ensure their accessibility.
