Mexico

From 1997 to 2007, FHI managed the IMPACT Project in Mexico, strengthening STI and HIV/AIDS prevention and care programs and conducting behavioral and biological research in collaboration with local partners. FHI also helped develop national STI guidelines and improve care and treatment facilities.

Working with the Centro Nacional para la Prevención y Control de VIH/SIDA/ITS (CENSIDA, the national AIDS program) and the Instituto Nacional de Salud Pública (INSP, the National Public Health Institute), FHI implemented a behavioral surveillance survey, enhanced monitoring and evaluation, and trengthened the technical and programmatic capacity of local NGOs. Project activities focused on those most vulnerable to HIV infection or more likely to transmit the virus. FHI targeted mobile populations with behavior change communication initiatives and collaborated with Colectivo Sol, a local research entity, to conduct a formative study among men who have sex with men. Findings informed development of HIV/AIDS prevention and care and treatment interventions.
