
Preventing Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV: A Tale of Two Families
MAY 2010 — Out of a population of 12 million, almost 1 million people in Malawi are living with HIV. Every year, an estimated 30,000 babies are born with HIV. With the provision of PMTCT services, infection rates could be reduced to less than 5 percent. FHI and the Abbott Fund are supporting the scale-up of PMTCT services in Malawi, aiming to drastically increase PMTCT coverage in Malawi.

Helping Caregivers Support Malawi's Most Vulnerable Children
MARCH 2009 — 100 caregivers in Malawi's Salima District can now move more quickly from one place and one child to another and reach more children with the support they need thanks to a donation of bicycles from The Funders' Collaborative for Children. FHI is working with FCFC to strengthen the provision of comprehensive care and support services for the district's nearly 30,000 orphans and other vulnerable children.

FHI works with U.S.-based researchers through the HIV Prevention Trials Network and its HIV Prevention Trials Units in Malawi.

AUGUST 2010 — This year FHI worked with the Ministry of Health to evaluate a pilot program in Malawi, where Health Surveillance Assistants (HSAs) provided the injectable contraceptive, depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA). Requested by USAID, the evaluation sought to help the MOH decide whether the pilot program should be scaled up.
