Mothers' Clubs Promote Immediate, Exclusive Breastfeeding
OCTOBER 2010 — An FHI/UNICEF initiative in Kenya's Coast and Rift Valley provinces is creating greater community awareness about the importance of early and exclusive breastfeeding. The Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) project promotes mothers' clubs to bring together new and experienced mothers to share ideas and learn from one another about how best to care for their children.

FHI Pilot in Kenya Tackles Cardiovascular Disease and HIV
SEPTEMBER 2010 — Heart disease is on the rise in the developing world, and people who take antiretroviral treatment for HIV are especially at risk. FHI is leading the way in addressing cardiovascular disease in the developing world through a Kenyan pilot program to demonstrate the effectiveness of integrating cardiovascular screening into HIV services.

FHI conducts research that closes the gap between theory and practice in health care. Through dynamic national and international partnerships, we
- Provide technical support for various aspects of research, including personnel training and clinical and medical monitoring of scientific activities
- Identify and build the capacity of HIV trial sites
- Lead clinical trials that test the safety and effectiveness of a pill to prevent HIV infection among women at high risk of being exposed to the virus
- Monitor studies on the efficacy of malaria medications and protocols, including a trial of injectable artesunate versus quinine for children with severe malaria
- Support large-scale research on vaccines to prevent rotavirus
- Expand the range of safe, effective, and culturally sensitive contraceptive and reproductive health technologies
- Develop and evaluate the use of mobile technology in family planning

Building Sustainable Public Health Programs in Kenya
AUGUST 2010 – This report highlights selected programs and research that we are undertaking with partners in Kenya in order to strengthen health service delivery and improve the lives of local communities. Activities include our work in malaria and TB; male circumcision for HIV prevention; prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV; support of national efforts to integrate reproductive health and family planning with HIV as well as TB with HIV services; peer education; and promotion of early and exclusive breastfeeding and child nutrition, among others.

Life Skills and Peer Education in Kenyan Schools
APRIL 2010 — Life skills and peer education curricula targeting Girl Guides and classes 4 to 7 in schools are available for download. The curricula were created with the assistance of the Kenyan Girl Guide Association, under the USAID-funded APHIA II Project.
