
Community-Based IDU Outreach Breaks Down Barriers
JANUARY 2010 — Injecting drug users in Indonesia have an average HIV prevalence of 52 percent in major cities, making needle and syringe programs critical to the country's response. Using non-US government funds provided by the Indonesian Partnership Fund for AIDS and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, FHI supports needle and syringe exchange programs that have reduced needle sharing from 9 to 36 percent among IDUs reached.

Innovative Sexual Health Website Reaches Indonesia's "Hidden" Population
JANUARY 2010 – Aksi Stop AIDS is supporting a multimedia campaign, It's My Life, to reach men who have sex with men (MSM) in six Indonesian cities. The HIV epidemic among MSM in Indonesia is occurring in a context of stigma and discrimination. As a result, many remain hidden and difficult to reach with information and services. This population is the one It's My Life is particularly interested in engaging.

Researchers Support Trials on Malaria and Asian Flu
Our researchers worked with the Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) on their clinical trials in Indonesia to compare the safety and efficacy of several treatments for patients with acute, uncomplicated malaria.
With support from the National Institutes of Health, we provided technical, logistical, and management assistance to the Southeast Asia Influenza Clinical Research Network (SEA ICRN) in establishing a high-quality research network to conduct clinical studies.

Comprehensive Training in Behavior Change for Outreach Workers
MAY 2008 — Changing high-risk behaviors related to commercial sex is central to containing the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Indonesia. So FHI/Indonesia is developing a comprehensive training program for outreach staff of over 65 partner NGOs, with the goal of improving their knowledge and skills associated with effective behavior change, with a special focus on increasing the use of safer sexual practices and promoting health-seeking behaviors related to HIV/AIDS.

Summary Report of Key Findings and Program Recommendations from FHI MSM Program Evaluations
OCTOBER 2007 — This study, prepared by FHI's Asia Pacific Regional Office (APRO), reveals an overall positive effect of FHI programming on knowledge, sexual risk behavior, and access to commodities and services through a variety of interventions such as behavior change, advocacy, networking, community mobilization, and capacity building. However, quality and coverage were inconsistent from one site to another and there is a need to promote a minimum package of priority interventions along with improved organizational capacity and program monitoring.
