Mobilize Against Malaria

Licensed Chemical SellerAPRIL 2012 — This short video documentary illustrates the impact of Mobilize Against Malaria (MAM) findings in Ashanti Region, Ghana. The project has trained over a thousand Licensed Chemical Sellers (LCSs), some of whom are shown here at work in their communities. MAM has found that if properly trained and supported, LCSs can play a greater role in the management of malaria at community level, and can be successfully incorporated into local and district health systems.

Going peer to peer against HIV

JANUARY 2012 — About 7,600 Ghanaian students have been tested for HIV through a campus-based mobile testing and counseling project run by the Ghana AIDS Commission with assistance from FHI 360. The project covers 22 postsecondary institutions, including teaching colleges, universities and vocational schools.

Wellness center helps couple with HIV disclosure

holding handsAUGUST 2011 — In Ghana, a wellness center for people living with HIV encouraged and eased one woman's disclosure of her HIV status to her husband. Counseling, support groups and peer educators helped Mary seek treatment, protect her spouse from transmission, and build a stronger marriage.

Cardiovascular Disease
FHI 360 is funding a pilot project that responds to the burgeoning threat of cardiovascular disease in Ghana.

HIV/AIDS
Through USAIDS's Strengthening HIV/AIDS Partnership with Evidence Based Results (SHARPER), we are conducting HIV prevention among most-at-risk populations.

We work with the Ghana AIDS Commission on youth projects in selected schools. Activities include behavior change communication, club formation, mobile counseling and testing, and referral.

Malaria
GlaxoSmithKline is funding our work on the Community Malaria Project. Activities include behavior change communication, home management of malaria, and referral to services.

The Pfizer Foundation supports our work to create demand for malaria treatment and refer patients to services. Learn more »

We hosted 10 Pfizer fellows in Ghana. These fellows work to apply corporate business practices to community and local NGO-led programs.

Neglected Tropical Diseases

FHI 360 is working to reduce the prevalence of seven neglected tropical diseases.

  • With support from the Hewlett Foundation, we are developing SMS text-messaging protocols and messages that increase use of longer-term contraceptive options and improve correct use of emergency contraception.
  • With Support from Tibotech, we are conducting a study into the causes of early death among persons on combination ART.
  • The Ghana AIDS Commission has provided us funding to conduct a national mapping and size estimation including Behavioral Surveillance Survey (BBSS) of female sex workers for Ghana.
  • Providing family planning information and/or services to
    postpartum women during their infants' immunization visits may be an effective way to reach women with high unmet need for family planning. Scroll to the bottom of this page to view a presentation on models for integration and our research results.
