Expanding Access to Contraceptive Implants 
 
JANUARY 2010 — The Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health last year launched a dramatic new effort to train health extension workers to provide Implanon, a contraceptive implant which provides three years of highly effective pregnancy prevention. FHI is providing technical assistance for monitoring and evaluation of the Implanon project.

The Royal Netherlands Embassy funds FHI/Ethiopia to manage its five-year strategic plan. This includes provision of technical assistance for sustainable development and long-term institutional strengthening of the national HIV/AIDS response

With support from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), FHI is working with most-at-risk populations to prevent HIV in rural and urban hotspots (Sept. 2009-Sept. 2014)

USAID and DAI support FHI's measuring and evaluation (M&E) work on the Urban Gardening Project (Oct. 2008-Sept. 2013)

Increasing Contraceptive Use and Lowering Rates of STIs
  • FHI is providing technical assistance to the Ministry of Health to expand access to the Implanon contraceptive implant in Ethiopia. 
     
     
  • With support from the David & Lucille Packard Foundation, FHI is studying whether linking credit programs with family planning programs might increase contraceptive prevalence and lower fertility rates.

  • Together with EngenderHealth, FHI is implementing and evaluating an intervention to introduce a new "dual protection" model of family planning counseling in Ethiopia. Dual protection refers to the approach of using a barrier method for protection against STIs and another method for contraception. Phase two of this multi-country study involves testing the intervention in approximately 20 sites.

Improving Care Options for Children in Ethiopia through Understanding Institutional Child Care and Factors Driving Institutionalization

report coverJUNE 2010 — This report describes a study developed through consultations between the Ethiopian Ministry of Women's Affairs, FHI, and UNICEF. It is the first study of its kind to take an in-depth look at institutional care in Ethiopia. The overall objective of the study was to understand the scope of the information on institutional care practices in Ethiopia, as well as the quality of this information and the gaps therein, with the purpose of informing efforts to improve the quality of alternative care--including institutional care--for children in Ethiopia.
