FHI Project Inspires Support for Integration of Services
OCTOBER 2010 — The results coming out of a USAID-funded project in The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) convinced the Ministry of Health to embrace HIV and family planning integration as a priority. Integration has proved to be an effective method of providing family planning services to men and younger, sexually active, single women who can be traditionally difficult to reach. Integrating services and scaling them up could reduce the simultaneous risk of HIV infection and unintended pregnancy for many women in the DRC, as well as avert mother-to-child transmission of the virus.

Through the Armed Forces AIDS Prevention Project, funded by the US Department of Defense, FHI provides HIV prevention, testing, and counseling for military personnel, their families, and surrounding populations in Lubumbashi, Mbuji-Mayi, Kinshasa, and Bukavu.
FHI implemented the USAID-funded Réseau Santé Plus (RESA+) from 2005 to 2009, a project that brought quality HIV services to truck drivers, miners, military personnel, female sex workers, and youth.

Pharmaceutical Breakthrough Reduces Malaria Deaths in Africa's Children
APRIL 2011 — Malaria is a leading cause of pediatric hospitalizations across Africa. Until recently, there was one main drug to treat severe malaria — quinine. A recent FHI-monitored study of an alternative medicine, artesunate, showed promising results. If artesunate was used to treat the 4 million annual cases of severe malaria among African children, about 100,000 lives could be saved each year.

TB/HIV Coinfection
NOVEMBER 2010 — DRC ranks 10th on the list of 22 high-burden tuberculosis countries in the world. The TB-HIV co-infection rate for new cases was an estimated 5.9 percent in 2007. With support from USAID and TBCTA, FHI DRC has published and disseminated the first normative and standard documents on HIV/TB coinfection in DRC, providing a legal framework for TB/HIV activities there. FHI advocated for the documents, led the editorial committee, managed production, and ensured their dissemination to medical personnel, program planners, and implementers.
