How an HIV Prevention and Care Project Gave Hope to an HIV-positive Sex Worker

Success StoryJANUARY 2010 – When Hadi, a sex worker and mother, learned that she was HIV-positive, she thought her life was over. The PAPO-HV project helped her regain her bearings and obtain access to antiretroviral therapy. Hadi went on to become founder of a support group for those with HIV.

FHI Partners with Hershey to Prevent Malaria in Côte d'Ivoire

Treated bednetJANUARY 2010 — A partnership between FHI and The Hershey Company that focuses on preventing malaria is improving the health of families in cocoa-growing regions of Côte d'Ivoire. In one year the partnership has distributed 3,000 insecticide-treated bednets to households with pregnant women and young children.

Cocoa Farming Community Reached with HIV Prevention

Farmer field school participantAPRIL 2009 — "Building and Strengthening Health and Wellness Activities for the Sustainable Tree Crops Program (STCP)" was an 18-month project aimed at improving the health of rural cocoa farmers through community education and mobilization activities relating to HIV/AIDS and malaria. The project's anchor initiative was the "farmer field school", a training program sponsored by STCP that engaged the cocoa farming communities in both countries in quality cocoa production and crop marketing.

Building Local Capacity to Improve Services for Vulnerable Children

AUGUST 2010 —Many African nations struggle to address the array of challenges faced by vulnerable children. The Ivorian government took action seven years ago to address the problem. FHI provided technical support and built local capacity, and now over 117,000 vulnerable children are receiving appropriate services. This is the story of a successful transfer of competencies.

Palliative Care Taskforce and National Strategy Documents

 

Pub coverFEBRUARY 2007 — In collaboration with the Cote d'Ivoire Ministry of Health, FHI assisted in the creation of a national palliative care taskforce, which it also runs. The  taskforce responds to the need for a coordinated approach, and greater collaboration between program partners and people living with HIV/AIDS, as well as between the government and NGOs.
