FHI Leads the Effort Toward HIV-free Newborns in Burundi

Woman in clinic

AUGUST 2009 — In Burundi, services that prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) started in September 2000 as a pilot project. FHI is spearheading the expansion of these services in this country, thanks to the USAID-funded ROADS Project, which is working to reduce HIV transmission, improve care, and reduce the impact of HIV and AIDS in nine East African countries that share major transport corridors.

Leading a Community Response to HIV/AIDS in Burundi

FEBRUARY 2008 — Last year RBP+ entered into a partnership with the ROADS Project to strengthen its capacity and reach. Within a year the organization transformed itself. PLHA in Kirundo are no longer simply clients of health services: they are partners with three provincial health centers regularly consulted on how PLHA programs can be improved, serving as essential outreach volunteers to the broader PLHA community, and accompanying PLHA as advocates in discussions with clinic staff.

The Regional Outreach Addressing AIDS through Development Strategies (ROADS) Project began in August 2005 with ROADS I, and has been extended until September 2013 through the follow-on project ROADS II. Funded by PEPFAR through USAID, the project supports comprehensive prevention, healthcare, and impact mitigation. FHI is the principal implementing partner of this Leader with Associates Award.
