The syndromic approach to STD management can be useful among
symptomatic clients where laboratory tests are not available.
The syndromic approach is especially useful for two common syndromes,
genital ulcer and urethral discharge.
Local STD prevalence rates and local resources, especially
drug availability, should be taken into consideration when designing
algorithms for the syndromic approach. In addition to diagnosis
and treatment, STD management should emphasize the four Cs.
